The cultivation of grains in Greece is under strong pressure due to the decrease in selling prices, while at the same time the increase in production costs can harm producers.

There are cases where the profit can be increased if the whole plant mass is harvested in time as green and available as animal feed, either directly or after ensiling. Therefore, if there is an early prediction service for how production will be available, then the producer could decide for himself how to harvest.

Making the production available as animal feed also has a positive impact on the environment, as water needs are reduced by 30-35%, while nitrogen fertilization can also be reduced. Conversely, a crop designed to be available as animal feed, the producer’s income can be increased if a high seed yield potential is predicted. Conventional grain crop management falls short in targeting how to utilize production, due to the lack of a reliable and scientifically validated biomass estimation system and timely prediction of grain production.

With such a system, the farmer will be able to make the appropriate decision on how to exploit production as early as possible in the growing season. Therefore, profit could be increased and at the same time the environmental footprint of grain cultivation could be reduced, aiming to produce low-input products that are more environmentally friendly.
